Residential Group Home Support Service

It is a type of residential support service that provides a stable, home-like living environment with 24-hour staffing for a small number of individuals who require continuous support.

These homes are primarily used to support adults with developmental disabilities who are eligible for funding through the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program. They allow residents to live in a community setting while receiving the personal care, skill development, and supervision they need.

Key Features of Group Homes

  • Residential Setting: Group homes are typically located in regular residential neighbourhoods to promote community inclusion and a home-like atmosphere.

  • Small Number of Residents: They usually accommodate a small number of residents, often two to five individuals, who are matched based on compatibility, needs, and interests.

  • 24-Hour Staffing: Trained support staff (often called Community Support Workers or Youth Development Workers) are on-site around the clock to assist with daily living, safety, and any immediate needs.

  • Individualized Support: Services are based on each resident's Individual Support Plan (ISP), which outlines their personal goals and the specific supports required.

Accessing Group Home Services

Access to a group home for an adult with a developmental disability is generally managed through the PDD program:

  • Eligibility: The individual must first be assessed and determined eligible for the PDD program.

  • Assessment & Planning: A PDD worker will assess the individual's needs and create an Outcome Plan.

  • Referral: The PDD worker then makes a referral to accredited community service providers who operate the group homes.

  • Matching: The service provider works to match the individual's needs, personality, and support requirements with an available space in a suitable group home.
